New recruits think they are bulletproof. Those who manage the streets from behind desks can turn into bureaucratic bullies. Real cop life, is somewhere in between. A cop’s life isn’t always the excitement that is “made for TV” — however, there is a true balance between mortal danger and death by boredom. Letting your guard down at the wrong time can cost you your life. Not playing by the bureaucratic rule book can cost you everything else. These are the true stories of one cop, in one city Portland, Oregon. Ron Brown was a Portland policeman for 10 years. Becoming a cop was never on his “life dream” to-do list. He was just a young man in desperate need of a job and an uncanny ability to beat out 96 other applicants. Whatever opinions he might have held regarding “a cop’s life” before entering the force — he was in for a rude awakening of the politics that are played behind the badge. There are those citizens who are targeted for tickets in order to raise revenue, and there are those “other” citizens who have a free pass to do their own thing. Cross them at your own peril. There are opportunities to help in a time of crisis, and there are heroic moves that cross the unwritten badge holder rules always play it safe. Not safe from street danger — safe from frivolous lawsuits or being found guilty of “politically incorrectness.” But in-between the good and the ugly, the heroic and the foolish, the danger and the glory — are those real life moments that awaken us to our own humanity. Moments that go beyond perceived status, beyond a reputation, beyond our well-formed prejudices — to a realization that we are all just people after all.
Bulletproof Cops and Bureaucratic Bullies Ron L Brown Books
"Bulletproof cops..." is a highly entertaining and revealing book about the inner workings of a big city police department in the States. Written by a young cop who thoroughly enjoyed being a cop but had a distaste for the politics and shenanigans being pulled by the police hierarchy, he weaves his personal stories of his day-to-day experiences on the beat with his personal attempts at challenging the "powers that be." Brown is a masterful storyteller and I found myself howling with laughter on one page only to be shaking my head on the next page at the injustices taking place in our places of "law and order." It's a great short read!Product details

Bulletproof Cops and Bureaucratic Bullies Ron L Brown Books Reviews
You shouldn't pass this up if you are a Portland native. It is chock full of references to Portland's zanier moments. Mr. Brown takes us with him on adventures with Portland's Finest, and not so finest. Join him in a kerfuffle at the Quality Pie and let him bring you back to the crazy tootsie roll toss weekends.
Take a peek at the City of Roses from behind the wheel of a black and white.
I enjoyed it all. It made me feel like I wasn't crazy to believe something funny goes on in government.
I love this book. I am having a great time reading this. So funny. I live in Sandy and like to read local authors.

Police officer Ron Brown, spent 10 years as a Portland Policeman and there began his own personal indoctrination into the ways that the legal system really works. Sometimes the justice system works -- and sometimes it doesn't.
The book is full of short stories, insights, and some absolutely crazy moments (how about searching for a bomb at the zoo in the Bengal Tiger's living space ... only to find out that the tiger is not caged up all that well)?
What a fun read.
Ron's true account is so funny! My husband and I have been reading it together and laughing our heads off. The reason it's so funny is that it's true. He doesn't cover up the faux pas of the police dept....there are good and bad cops. Ron's sense of humor is refreshing.
I grew up and worked in the neighborhoods described by Ron Brown in his hard-to-put-down book, Bulletproof Cops and Bureaucratic Bullies. I remember many of the events & officers that are described in the book; Randy Pulley, Dennis Darden, Roger Waters, and of course Ron Brown. It was quite a ride back then that you can revisit anytime by picking up this book, especially if you were alive in NW Portland in the 1970's. I got 'fight the good fight' & love your family in whatever you do from this book. A must read! Thank you Ron Brown!
This book is not politically correct. It is quite funny. If you like the show Portlandia, you might enjoy seeing Portland from a new view, the view of a rookie policeman in the 1970's. It points to the corruption of the Portland Police back then (and I would suspect today). I particularly liked the story about Senator Mark O. Hatfield's mother-in-law getting off a ticket. As the author writes, "It was all perfectly legal and underhanded. It was very Portland of them." True stories inside the Portland Police Department.
A good read, even half a world away in New Zealand. I fully enjoyed it.
